SUMMARY:How to Build a Ceramic Sculpture
DESCRIPTION:Age Group: This is a family ceramics workshop and is suitable for children 6+\nJoin Wild Rangers and artist Lily German for this family ceramics workshop\, part of Lewisham’s London Borough of Culture 2022 creative programme. \nFor this workshop we head to Camp Nesbit and read a short passage from the story Five Children and It and explore Edith Nesbit’s quirky character of the Psammead (Sand Fairy) and other creatures that once roamed the earth. We learn how climate change and human activity has created difficult living spaces for our wildlife\, and what we can do to make things better for them and us. \nWe then get creative with artist Lily German who will teach us clay building skills to make our very own ‘Psammead’ – drawing inspiration from the creatures we learn about. \nWe will then write a wish for the future and leave it in the woodland for the Psammead to make true! \n  \nWhy not make a day of it and also join our afternoon workshop with author Nan Eshelby. \n  \nBooking:\nBook your place via Eventbrite. This is a family drawing workshop and is suitable for children 6+. Due to limited spaces\, please limit to one adult per booking to accompany up to two children for the workshop. However\, if younger siblings are coming\, another adult carer can accompany them to enjoy exploring the Ringway Woodland Garden. Please arrive by 11.50am to complete registration and allow us to start workshop on time. \n  \n  \nSupported by: \n

SUMMARY:How to Make a Graphic Novel Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Age Group: This is suitable for children 6+. Must be accompanied by an adult.\nJoin the Wild Rangers team and author Emily Haworth-Booth for this free comics workshop\, part of Lewisham’s London Borough of Culture 2022 creative programme. \nWe kick-off learning about some of the creative ways people have worked together to protect the environment throughout history. Emily will also read from her book ‘PROTEST! How People Have Come Together to Change the World’. \nBy exploring the themes #Protest #Growing #Nature #ClimateAction\, we get creative to illustrate a story about the future we want to create. Emily will then guide participants through the creation of their graphic novel\, encouraging them to think about an environmental issue they feel strongly about\, such as loss of green spaces or plastic pollution – and then\, working through an inspiring series of prompts\, to create a comics sequence showing them first becoming concerned about the issue and then taking steps to address it. \n Graphic novels are a great way of encouraging children’s imagination and mastering new methods of self-expression via visual storytelling \nApprox. workshop timings: \nArrive by 10:15 for registration \n10.30 – 11.15 – History of Eco Activism- how we’ve come together to change the world!\n \n11.15-11.45 – Refreshment break and an opportunity to contribute a drawing or short prose or poem to our ‘Growing for Peace’ ideas wall.\n \n11.45-1.00 – Creating a graphic novel. \n  \nPeople power is at the heart of all of Emily’s books\, and her stories strive to show the connection between nature and living peacefully. Her characters always find that when they stop trying to destroy or control nature\, and work with and nourish it instead\, they live more peaceful and fulfilling lives. We want to bring these stories to life with real action on the ground. \nWe hope that all graphic novel contributions will be on display at our exhibition on Saturday 3rd December 2022 – so save the date. Favourite stories chosen on the 3rd December will also be part of a time capsule and an online digital library. \nNB. We can return all original illustrated stories to the creators following the exhibition. \nBooking\nPlease book via Eventbrite. Due to limited spaces\, please limit to one adult per booking to accompany up to two children for the workshop. However\, if younger siblings are coming\, another adult carer can accompany them to enjoy exploring the Ringway Woodland Garden. Please arrive by 10.15 to complete registration to allow the workshop to start on time. \n  \nSupported by: \n

We will explore seed pods and leaf patterns through foraging and making with clay. Clay at The Ringway offers adult and children 10-week hand-building ceramics courses\, as well as\, family and one-off events. \nWild Rangers Nature-inspired Activities\n‘Growing for Peace’ Workshop by Wild Rangers in collaboration with award-winning local author Emily Haworth-Booth \nThis is the first of a series of workshops till December 2022 as part of London Borough of Culture 2022\, to inspire action for nature recovery. Gingko seeds will be arriving soon from the international Mayor’s for Peace programme. These remarkable seeds are from gingko trees which survived the atomic bomb in Hiroshima in 1945 and provide a symbolic reminder of the need for peace\, unity\, reconciliation and resilience. Once they germinate and establish\, some will return to Grove Park and be planted in the new district park\, linking our existing Peace Garden in Chinbrook Meadows and the Peace Pole in Grove Park Nature Reserve. \nEmily Haworth-Booth joins Wild Rangers for the day to read from her children’s books – The Last Tree and others\, which have powerful messages about how positive change can be achieved for our environment and society when people come together and work united to achieve good – in the same way residents in Grove Park came together to stop the Ringway 2 motor from destroying the neighbourhood for ever. \nThroughout the day there will also be some drop-in workshop sessions where children explore the theme of peace and the gingko and are invited to design the space in the new parkland were the gingko tree will eventually be planted. See Wild Rangers events page for other forthcoming ‘Growing for Peace’ events. \nTreasure Seekers Trail \nExplore the wonderful Ringway Woodland along the treasure seekers trail\, find all the local history clues to come claim your prize! \nOther Nature-inspired Arts and Crafts \n\n\nMake a bug stone. \n\n\nCreate a pressed flower greeting card. \n\n\nMake a bubble wand. \n\n\nMake a leaf print. \n\n\nGo on a nature hunt walk. \n\n\nGrow some veg or flowers. \n\n\nEcology Walk with Ecologist Dennis Vickers\nTime TBC. Join a walk through horse meadow towards the Peace Pole at Grove Park Nature Reserve with ecologist Dennis Vickers who will talk about all the wonderful wildlife and habitats we have on our doorstep. \nRailway Children District Park Consultation and Engagement\nThe Baring Trust – a local heritage organisation – were awarded project development funding from the GLA Green and Resilient Spaces fund to further develop the district park vision that was set out in the Grove Park Neighbourhood Plan. With some match funding from Lewisham Council’s NCIL fund\, the project aims to bring existing Metropolitan Open Land\, that runs along the Grove Park railway cutting\, into more active use as a coherent parkland. \nLandscape architects LDA Design are now on board to help work out what’s possible on the site (a feasibility study) and then pull together a ‘big picture’ design (a masterplan) for it all. \nAs a community-led project\, we want everyone to contribute ideas. Come talk to the design team on the 2nd of July to find out more\, share your experiences of local green spaces and how you use them\, and help us think about how we can make this a parkland for everyone. \n\n\n11:00 – 11:00 – short talk introducing the project \n\n\n11.30 – 15:00 – drop in any time to talk to the design team and contribute your comments and ideas for the parkland design. \n\n\n\nRaffle Prize Draw\nSupport our raffle draw with lots of great prizes – all money raised goes towards improving the Ringway Centre.

SUMMARY:Exhibition of Grove Park's Invertebrates
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Monday 25th October 10 am-12 pm to discover the world of invertebrates found in Grove Park with our macro-photography exhibition. These photos have been captured by Pedro on the Wild Rangers team who will join us to talk about all these amazing mini-beast finds\, all recorded as part of our citizen science work. \nThe photography reveals so many interesting things about these beautiful creatures\, especially their art forms. Patterns in nature have long been known to promote calm and wellbeing. \nAccording to new analysis by the Natural History Museum the UK has only half of its entire biodiversity left\, putting it in the bottom 10% of the world’s countries. This trend must be reversed. Invertebrates are so vital to a healthy food production system\, whether they are pollinating our crops or churning and decomposing our soils to make a healthy growing medium. You can’t have food growing without the help of these mini-beats. \nFind out about our plans to increase biodiversity with improvements to be made to the Ringway Garden and give us your feedback of the initial design ideas. \nTake home a wild flower seed ball to create your own pollinator meadow ready for spring. \nBetween 10 am to 11 am\, you will have a chance to look at the exhibition (both printed and on screen) and look through a macroscope at some specimens. Then at 11 am join a walk with Pedro and Stephen to retrace some of the transects where these species were recorded\, through the Nature Reserve. \n  \nThe workshop is free\, but if you’d like to come along\, please complete the booking form here.

SUMMARY:30th July - Mud and Creepy Crawlies
DESCRIPTION:In this session we discover where clay comes from and how it forms mud to support millions of creepy crawlies. We look at fossilised clay mud balls and investigate all the weird & wonderful mini-beasts found in our woodland – all which come in different shapes and sizes. \n\nThrough clay techniques such as pinching and coiling we will then create our own mini-beast sculpture to take home\, inspired by all the creepy crawlies we find.\n\n\nPlease note\, this session is for kids only. We recommend ages 7 years upwards\, however 6 year olds can attend if they are generally happy staying and doing structured activities without parents. There are general nature-based activities\, including working with clay that children of all ages can be involved in\, interpreting them in their own way. \nTo book\, plese download the booking form from the What we Do page and return by email to hello@wildrangers.org.uk. SUMMARY:3rd July - Family Day - Treasure Hunt
DESCRIPTION:Join a family fun day. We will set off from Camp Nesbit and follow the treasure trail to Grove Park Nature Reserve and the Railway Children Embankments. We will hunt for natural treasures in the different habitats on the way. We return to camp and learn how to make nature imprinted clay pinch pots and clay seed bombs.  This sensory exploration of natural materials is a great way to get children discovering textures in nature which can then inspire creative works with clay. The aim is to get kids moving\, touching\, listening\, noticing\, and interacting with the outdoors in a totally different way\, encouraging them to use and develop their observation skills. Scavenger hunts are great at helping children pay more attention and awareness to their surroundings and the environment. \n  \nPlease note\, there are no age restrictions for family days. There are general activities\, including working with clay that children of all ages can be involved in\, interpreting them in their own way. Younger children will be led by parents in the way they know them best. \nTo book\, plese download the booking form from the What we Do page.
