Join the Wild Rangers team and author Emily Haworth-Booth for this free comics workshop, part of Lewisham’s London Borough of Culture 2022 creative programme.
We kick-off learning about some of the creative ways people have worked together to protect the environment throughout history. Emily will also read from her book ‘PROTEST! How People Have Come Together to Change the World’.
By exploring the themes #Protest #Growing #Nature #ClimateAction, we get creative to illustrate a story about the future we want to create. Emily will then guide participants through the creation of their graphic novel, encouraging them to think about an environmental issue they feel strongly about, such as loss of green spaces or plastic pollution – and then, working through an inspiring series of prompts, to create a comics sequence showing them first becoming concerned about the issue and then taking steps to address it.
Graphic novels are a great way of encouraging children’s imagination and mastering new methods of self-expression via visual storytelling
Approx. workshop timings:
Arrive by 10:15 for registration
10.30 – 11.15 – History of Eco Activism- how we’ve come together to change the world!
11.15-11.45 – Refreshment break and an opportunity to contribute a drawing or short prose or poem to our ‘Growing for Peace’ ideas wall.
11.45-1.00 – Creating a graphic novel.
People power is at the heart of all of Emily’s books, and her stories strive to show the connection between nature and living peacefully. Her characters always find that when they stop trying to destroy or control nature, and work with and nourish it instead, they live more peaceful and fulfilling lives. We want to bring these stories to life with real action on the ground.
We hope that all graphic novel contributions will be on display at our exhibition on Saturday 3rd December 2022 – so save the date. Favourite stories chosen on the 3rd December will also be part of a time capsule and an online digital library.
NB. We can return all original illustrated stories to the creators following the exhibition.
Please book via Eventbrite. Due to limited spaces, please limit to one adult per booking to accompany up to two children for the workshop. However, if younger siblings are coming, another adult carer can accompany them to enjoy exploring the Ringway Woodland Garden. Please arrive by 10.15 to complete registration to allow the workshop to start on time.
